Monschau

The enchanted cloth-making town of Monschau is a real gem that is well worth discovering. In the narrow streets between listed half-timbered houses and quarry stone buildings you will find museums, galleries, boutiques, nice cafés and restaurants where you can linger. A special attraction are the Monschauer Dütchen, Vennbrocken, Printen, Els, mustard and coffee.

The town’s landmark is the “Red House”. Dating from the 18th century, the building was once built and used as a residence, counting house and manufacturing site for the world-famous clothier Johann Heinrich Scheibler. Today it houses a museum in which many details of the original furnishings are on display.  Here, the 250-year history can be experienced.

The mighty castle, whose core dates back to the 12th century, towers over the town. If you walk through the gateway that leads directly through the fortress wall of the round bastion tower and its gun chambers, you can best experience the castle’s enormous wall strength. The castle is a popular destination for young and old and also offers lots of fun for children and school classes during the playful “Burgerstürmung”.

A special highlight for those interested in culture is the annual Monschau Festival against the backdrop of the historic castle courtyard. The festival has established a firm place for itself in the world of music festivals and the performances by renowned artists from all over the world enjoy greater popularity every year. Whether opera, operetta, ballet or concert, Monschau Castle offers a setting that is as original as it is dignified.
